HEROES

VISION &
CONCEPT

HEROES is a three-year EU-funded project under the Horizon2020 framework that plays an important role in fostering the EU energy transition through the development of new energy stationary storage system for electric vehicles (EV). To achieve a decarbonized transport system, EVs are expected to contribute to a 40% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and up to 95% by 2050. However, for the wider adoption of EVs, some key barriers need to be removed such as the lack of charging infrastructures and long charging times. Therefore, well distributed fast-charging infrastructures are needed; since such infrastructures are difficult to install on the widely available low-voltage (LV) grid, stationary batteries represent a great match for fast-charging stations as they can increase the capacity of stations in a cost-effective manner. Yet, to achieve this system, high power and high energy are needed, which is not yet available from battery solutions in the market.

HEROES is working to develop a new disruptive hybrid high power/high energy stationary storage system for fast charging EVs that can be connected to widespread LV grids. The project intends to create a system that will be suitable for high-power and high-energy applications and which will provide longer battery life, more energy cells, simpler and cheaper management and lower overall system cost.

The HEROES system will as a result be a key enabler for the widespread fast charging of electric vehicles without the need for major work and investments in the grid.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the HEROES project is to develop and demonstrate an innovative system consisting of a state-of-the-art Li-ion capacitor (LiC) with optimized balance of power and energy for EVs fast charging. This will be combined with Li-ion batteries (LiBs) to store high amounts of energy and serve as back-up when the charging demand of EVs surpasses the LiC and grid connection capacity. The HEROES system takes advantage of both storage technologies and is suitable for both high-power and high-energy applications, creating a system that has a higher efficiency and better performance.

The project outcomes will be key enablers for the cost-effective deployment of EVs fast charging stations and will contribute to overcome one of the major bottlenecks for the wide adoption of EVs across Europe, without the need for major investments in the grid. To achieve this overall objective, specific scientific and technical objectives have been set.
